            (slokas ೫೧ to ೭೫)
Mooka Panchashati is a devotional composition by Muka Kavi dedicated to Kamakshi. The real name of the poet is not known. Legend has it that he was born dumb but regained not only his voice  by  the grace of Goddess Kamakshi but also became a poet of considerable merit. Mooka Panchashati  consists of five satakams, each Satakam containing ೧೦೦ verses. The Satakams  are Arya Satakam, Padaravinda Satakam, Stuti Satakam, Kataksha Satakam and Mandasmita Satakam.

Goddess Kamakshi is the presiding deity of Kancheepuram.  Her consort is Ekamreshwara, an aspect of Lord Shiva.  Kanchi is the Central Peetham established by Aadi Shankaracharya who installed and consecrated the  idol of Kamakshi and established the system of worship there. The other  Peethams are at Badrinath in the North, Dwarka in theWest,  Puri in the East and Sringeri (Sringa giri) in the South.

The translation into English of a hymn of this nature is a delicate task and readers may kindly pardon the shortcomings, though every attempt has been made to make the translation as close as possible to the intended or perceived meaning.

O Kamakshi ! Let  your lotus feet, like the king of lions, standing guard without rest and without armour, at the entrance of my heart-cave and proudly displaying its main which are the bright light rays emanating from your toe nails, quickly put an end to the elephant of darkness (ignorance) in my heart.

O Kamakshi! your feet are more beautiful than the lotus. They are cooled by the bright white radiance from the toe-nails which resemble karpur (camphor).  They are also
sprinkled with the ice water from the crescent moon on the head of Shiva (who bows down at your feet).  They make friends with blossoms of bright red tender leaves (leaf buds) as a fellow-traveller ( Your lotus feet resemble a blossom of tender leaves with their red colour)

O Kamakshi!  May the tinkling of the anklets of your lotus feet protect us.  Those sounds from the anklets are the chants (japa) for always attracting wealth for those who prostrate before your lotus feet.  They are chants (japa) for stopping the onslaught of samasara  which spreads and gains weight.  They are also chants (japa) for  captivating the heart of Shiva (who burnt Kama, Cupid)

The bright red radiance from the lotus feet of Kamakshi, as it were, is fire. The swarm of bees flitting around the mandara flowers on the crowns of celestials bowing down before her feet give the impression of smoke (because of their dark colour).  May that fire of the lotus feet of Kamakshi burn up the forest of my samsara.

O Kamakshi! there is this natural similarity between tender leaf buds  and your lotus feet; both are soft and of pink colour.  But to the wise there appears to be a difference.  The former’s desire is in the forest (ವನೇ)  the latter’s desire is in protecting (ಅವನೇ) the worlds always.  [In Sanskrit ‘ಅ’ is prefixed to a word to derive its opposite.  Thus ’ವನೇ’ is the opposite of ‘ವನೇ’]
